Editors note : this blog post was updated for 2026 fall!
There is no season I love dressing for more than fall. The layers, rich colors, beautiful textures and return to all those classic pieces that have been tucked away for the summer always make my wardrobe feel new again.
I’ve never been one to completely reinvent my closet with every passing trend. Instead, my fall wardrobe capsule is built around timeless staples I can pull out year after year, a great pair of jeans, classic button-downs, loafers, sweaters, a heritage jacket and a few beautiful accessories.
Each season I add just a handful of pieces that make those old favorites feel current again.
For Fall 2026, I’m seeing a return to so many things I’ve always loved: heritage outerwear, bandana scarves, rich woven textures, chocolate brown, deep burgundy and relaxed denim. In other words, this year’s trends feel decidedly Old Soul, and I’m here for it.
Here are the fall wardrobe staples I’m wearing for 2026, along with the few trends I think are actually worth adding to a timeless wardrobe.

I’ve gathered the pieces I’m wearing, loving and considering for Fall 2026 into one place, from heritage jackets and great denim to loafers, scarves, sweaters and the little accessories that make an old wardrobe feel new again.
Fall 2026 Style Trends I’m Actually Wearing
I tend to approach trends with a pretty simple rule: would I still want to wear this five years from now? The best trends aren’t necessarily new at all. They’re often familiar pieces returning in a slightly different proportion, color or texture.
That’s exactly what I’m seeing for Fall 2026 women’s style. Rather than chasing anything overly trendy, I’m adding richness and texture to the classic wardrobe I already own.
1. Bandana Scarves
One of my favorite little additions this fall is the return of the bandana scarf. Such an Americana staple that is always really in style.
I’m seeing everything from traditional cotton bandanas and oversized bandana prints to those little knit triangle scarves that have become such an easy layering piece. I especially love the oversized bandana styles from The Great. They have that wonderfully worn-in, Americana feeling that looks like something you might have found tucked away in an old trunk.
Wear one tied loosely around your neck with a white button-down, tucked inside the collar of a barn jacket, over a sweater or even tied onto the handle of a favorite bag. It’s a tiny addition that can completely change an otherwise simple outfit.

2. Heritage Outerwear
If you’ve had a Barbour jacket tucked away in your closet, now is certainly the time to pull it back out. Waxed field jackets, barn coats, quilted jackets and utility-inspired outerwear all feel especially relevant again for fall.
But this is exactly why I love investing in heritage pieces in the first place. A great field jacket never really went out of style. I love one thrown over jeans and a sweater, layered over a dress or paired with loafers for that slightly British countryside look I always seem to come back to.
Look for waxed cotton, corduroy collars, oversized pockets, quilting and traditional earthy colors like olive, brown, tan and navy.
3. Chocolate Brown Is Still King
Brown continues to be one of the most important colors in my fall wardrobe for 2026, and I’m not complaining. Chocolate, espresso, tobacco, cognac and camel all feel softer and richer to me than black, particularly when they’re mixed with cream, denim, olive and blue. And you certainly don’t need an entirely brown outfit.
A chocolate suede bag, brown leather loafer, espresso cardigan or cognac belt is enough to bring that warmth into your wardrobe.
Brown is also one of those “trends” that really isn’t trendy at all. These are colors that have existed in classic wardrobes forever, which makes them exactly the kind of thing I’m comfortable investing in.

4. Burgundy + Oxblood
The other color I’m seeing everywhere is burgundy.
You might also see it called oxblood, wine, merlot or bordeaux, depending on just how deep and brown or purple the shade leans.
I especially love it in small doses. A burgundy loafer with denim. An oxblood leather handbag. A deep wine sweater with khaki trousers. Even a scarf or pair of socks peeking out beneath a loafer. It mixes beautifully with all the colors already in my fall wardrobe, particularly chocolate brown, camel, navy, olive and cream.
If you want one easy way to make your existing wardrobe feel like Fall 2026, add a little burgundy.
5. Rich, Woven Textures
This might be my favorite Fall 2026 style trend because texture makes even the simplest outfit interesting.
I’m seeing so much suede, velvet, corduroy, woven leather, chunky wool and brushed knits. Instead of adding another basic piece, I’m looking for a familiar silhouette in a beautiful material.
Think:
A suede loafer instead of smooth leather.
A woven leather handbag instead of a basic tote.
A chunky cardigan over a fine-gauge sweater.
A corduroy collar on a field jacket.
A velvet sneaker instead of another white leather pair.
It’s a subtle difference, but those tactile materials are what give a fall wardrobe so much depth.
6. Woven Handbags
Woven bags aren’t just for summer anymore.
I’m loving woven leather and textural handbags in chocolate, cognac, oxblood and other deep neutrals for fall.
They bring some of the handmade, collected feeling I love into an outfit and pair particularly well with denim, sweaters and heritage outerwear.
Rather than an overly polished “It Bag,” I find myself drawn to bags that look like something you might have owned forever.
7. Relaxed Denim
Denim continues to move toward a more relaxed silhouette.
I’m wearing and seeing more wide-leg jeans, straight-leg styles, barrel or bowed silhouettes, full-length denim and deep cuffs. I don’t think this means you need to throw out every other pair of jeans you own.
For a timeless wardrobe, I’d invest first in a really good straight or relaxed wide-leg jean. Then, if you love the more exaggerated barrel shape, add one as your trend-forward pair. I’m especially loving these fuller jeans paired with something more traditional on top, a button-down, fitted sweater, blazer or field jacket. That balance keeps them feeling classic rather than overly trendy.
8. Fall Sneakers Get an Upgrade
The sneaker isn’t going anywhere, but I’m loving it in richer fall materials. Suede, velvet and deeper seasonal colors instantly make a sneaker feel more intentional than the basic white pair we’ve all been wearing for years.
Chocolate brown, burgundy, olive and navy are particularly good. They’re also an easy way to make wide-leg jeans and a sweater feel current without changing anything else about the outfit.

Why a Capsule Wardrobe Works for Fall
A capsule wardrobe focuses on fewer, better pieces that stand the test of time. Fall is the perfect season for this approach — layering is key, and versatile fabrics and silhouettes shine. Neutral tones, cozy textures, and quality tailoring are at the heart of a wardrobe that lasts beyond a single season. Think of it as building a foundation that’s classic and then sprinkling in a few trends for personality.

How to Build a Fall Wardrobe Capsule
Start with what you already own.
Pull out your jeans, sweaters, button-downs, jackets and shoes and identify the pieces you genuinely wear every fall. Then look for the holes.
Maybe you have five sweaters but no great everyday jacket. Perhaps you have plenty of jeans but need a loafer that makes them feel a little more polished. That’s how I prefer to shop. Instead of starting every season with a list of things I supposedly “need,” I want to slowly build a wardrobe of pieces that earn their place year after year. Then I might add one or two seasonal updates, a burgundy bag, a bandana scarf or a suede sneaker, to make those old favorites feel fresh again.
That’s my version of a fall capsule wardrobe. Less chasing. More collecting.
My Fall Wardrobe Essentials
I don’t believe a fall wardrobe needs to be especially large. In fact, I find myself reaching for the same tried-and-true pieces year after year. The key is choosing timeless staples that work together, then adding a few seasonal pieces to make everything feel fresh. These are the pieces that form the foundation of my fall wardrobe.
A Great Pair of Jeans
A really good pair of jeans is probably the hardest-working piece in my fall wardrobe. This year I’m gravitating toward more relaxed silhouettes, especially straight-leg and wide-leg denim, along with the slightly bowed or barrel shapes we’re seeing everywhere. I love them with everything from a simple button-down and loafers to a chunky sweater and sneakers.
The Classic Button-Down
There are few things more timeless than a crisp button-down. I tend to come back to white, pale blue Oxford cloth and classic heritage stripes because they layer so beautifully under sweaters and jackets. I also love wearing one slightly oversized with jeans and the sleeves casually rolled.
A Beautiful Sweater
Fall is sweater season, and I’d much rather have a handful of beautiful knits I truly love than an entire drawer of them. Cashmere, wool and soft cotton in oatmeal, cream, navy, camel and chocolate brown will work year after year. A classic crewneck is especially versatile and can be worn alone, over a button-down or draped over your shoulders on warmer fall days.
The Heritage Jacket
A barn coat, waxed field jacket or quilted jacket gives even the simplest outfit instant character. I love the slightly British countryside feel of a classic Barbour-style jacket, especially in olive or brown with a corduroy collar. This is exactly the kind of piece I want in my wardrobe, something that actually looks better after years of wear.
Classic Loafers
Loafers are one of those shoes I never really stop wearing, but they feel particularly right in the fall. Brown leather, suede and deep oxblood are my favorites this season. Wear them with jeans, trousers or even a skirt with socks once the weather gets cooler. I got these!
A Fall Sneaker
I’m still wearing sneakers constantly, but this fall I’m swapping some of my basic white pairs for richer textures and colors. Suede, velvet and other tactile materials in chocolate brown, tobacco, burgundy or olive make an everyday sneaker feel much more seasonal while remaining just as practical. I got these sneakers in Navy.
The Everyday Handbag
I want an everyday bag to feel beautiful without being precious. This fall I’m especially drawn to rich brown leather, suede and woven leather bags that add texture to an otherwise simple outfit. A great bag is also one of the easiest ways to bring chocolate brown, cognac or burgundy into a wardrobe without buying an entirely new outfit. This is the one I want to update for Fall.
A Bandana or Scarf
This might be my favorite little wardrobe update for Fall 2026. A bandana or scarf adds pattern, color and personality to the most basic jeans-and-sweater combination. I’m loving traditional bandana prints, oversized versions and the little knit triangle scarves that have been popping up everywhere. Tie one around your neck, tuck it inside a jacket or add it to the handle of your handbag.
The Perfect Trouser
I don’t want my fall wardrobe to be entirely denim, so a great trouser is essential. Think classic chinos, corduroys or a relaxed tailored trouser in khaki, camel, chocolate or olive. They make sweaters and sneakers feel more polished and give loafers and button-downs that wonderfully timeless menswear-inspired look I love.
The Layering Tee
Perhaps the least exciting piece on the list, but certainly one of the most useful. I live in simple tees under sweaters, jackets and button-downs throughout fall. White, cream, navy and a classic stripe give you plenty of options and make getting dressed incredibly easy.
A Fall Wardrobe Made to Last
The goal isn’t to buy all ten pieces new every fall. Quite the opposite.
A good fall wardrobe capsule should get better over time. Keep the great jeans. Rewear the old Barbour. Resole the loafers. Pull out the sweater you’ve loved for five years. Then add a bandana, a burgundy bag or a pair of suede sneakers if you want to make everything feel a little more current.
To me, that’s what timeless style is really about. Not wearing the same thing forever, but building on the good things you’ve already collected.

My Fall 2026 Color Palette
My fall wardrobe tends to stay within a fairly consistent palette year after year, which is one of the secrets to creating a capsule wardrobe that actually works.
For Fall 2026, I’m building around:
- Chocolate Brown
Burgundy + Oxblood
Olive Green
Camel + Tobacco
Cream + Oatmeal
Navy
Denim Blue - When most of your wardrobe lives within the same family of classic colors, getting dressed becomes remarkably simple.
Your brown loafers work with your denim and your cords. Your olive field jacket works over the cream sweater and the blue Oxford. Your burgundy handbag gives all of it a little color.
You don’t necessarily need more clothes.
You need more things that work together.
Fall style trends are all about balance. It’s not about chasing every new item, but about choosing pieces that fit seamlessly into your life and reflect your personal style. By investing in timeless classics and sprinkling in seasonal updates, your fall wardrobe will feel both current and enduring.
