Patriotic Monster Cookies
With Independence Day approaching, it was time to bake up some festive, patriotic recipes to grace our picnic table. These irresistible Patriotic Monster Cookies are chewy peanut butter oatmeal cookies chock full of red, white, and blue M&M’s and chocolate chips.
This Monster Cookie Recipe is perfect for the trio of Patriotic Holidays that start in May!

Why You Should Make this Monster Cookie Recipe
- Hot dogs and apple pie are classic Americana as far as foods go. Plus anything red, white, and blue. I’ve made those desserts topped with blueberries and raspberries to look like an American flag, S’mores Desserts, and grilled a slew of burgers and dogs. But a super simple way to make a patriotic dessert is to add red white and blue M&Ms!
- This is a twist on a classic peanut butter oatmeal cookie I’ve been eating since the 1970s.
- If you love peanut butter cookies and oatmeal cookies, you’ll adore monster cookies!
My mom introduced my sisters and me to the Original Monster Cookie Recipe in the ’70s. Her recipe was huge, calling for 2 pounds of peanut butter and nuts in addition to the chocolate.
Extras were stored in our deep freeze, and we were known to munch on them frozen. They were dubbed “monster” cookies due to their massive size–which our teenage metabolism could handle quite well.
This is a scaled-down version, and one where you don’t have to calculate how many cups are in a pound of peanut butter! These cookies are super chewy and outrageously delicious. After you try this recipe and fall in love with these cookies, I recommend baking up a batch of Monster Cookie Dough Cupcakes!
Tips for Making Monster Cookies
Here are a few tips for making monster cookies:
- Use a cookie disher to scoop out consistent-sized dough balls.
- Roll the dough balls between the palms of your hands to make them more symmetrical (chilling the dough first makes this easier).
- PRO-Tip: If your cookies come out of the oven misshapen, hold onto the cookie sheet using an oven mitt, and with the other hand, carefully use a spatula to reshape the hot cookies into rounds. Or use a round cookie cutter a few sizes larger than your baked cookie and place it over each hot cookie to nudge it into a nice spherical shape.
- PRO-Tip: M&M’s tend to crack in the oven, so reserve what’s left in your bag to press into the hot, fresh out of the oven cookies for a more professional look.
- Use other color combinations depending on the time of year to make festive monster cookies—red and green at Christmas, black and orange for Halloween, pastel M&Ms for Easter.
Frequently Asked Questions
One source surmised that these are called monster cookies because they’re like Frankenstein’s monster, a mishmash of cookie recipe components. But they were actually developed in 1971, by a Michigan State University photographer, Dick Wesley, when he was trying to bake peanut butter cookies but was out of flour.
Instead, he ground oats as a replacement and made a monster-sized recipe with 2 cups of margarine, 3 pounds of peanut butter, 12 eggs, walnuts, and more. Much like the recipe my mom used in the 1970s!
Monster cookies are basically flourless peanut butter oatmeal cookies. But they also have chocolate chips, M&Ms, and walnuts added to the mix.
Monster cookies follow the typical procedure for mixing cookie dough. Blend softened butter and sugars, mix in eggs, mix in dry ingredients, then mix in add-ins, like chocolate chips and candies.

Our Newest Family Member!

Here’s our newest addition to our family, Miss Isabelle, or Izzy. She’s now 8 weeks old, darling as can be, but full of mischief.
She was pulling out bookmarks from my cookbooks as well as chewing on them, so I removed all temptation from the bottom of the above bookshelf. She decided it was the perfect spot to perch. I’m sure Izzy will be making a few more appearances on the blog.

I love these monster cookies! They are so rich and indulgent – perfect after a long day of hard work!
What chewy, delicious cookies. I made a test run this week, before the 4th of July, and used regular colored M & Ms but I will certainly be making these again over the summer using red, white and blue! The peanut butter, chocolate and vanilla flavor combination is incredible. My family loved this recipe!
I’m so glad they were a hit, Melinda!!! Hope you have a great weekend.
I love that these are made with oats and peanut butter. Makes me feel I’m eating something healthy and I love the flavor it gives. Never had M&Ms in cookies, but now I’m hooked.
Also: thanks for the bonus puppy picture! So adorable!
My pup munches 2 of my cookbooks when he was young. Lowest shelf too, so thankfully not my favourites. These days he contents with letters I get when I’m not at home. Of course only the important ones. *Sigh*
Oh how festive and fun. Frankly, and dessert that includes M&Ms is one I will love! Happy 4th of July and hope you have a lovely holiday weekend. 🙂 ~Valentina
These cookies look great! Love the garnish of M&Ms — so colorful. Thanks!
I love the red, white, and blue M&Ms in these cookies. Yes, they are perfect for the 4th of July. Monster cookies have always been one of my favorite cookies.
The only kind of monster I like!
Your cookies look yummy.

I love cookie and your Patriotic Monster Cookies. Can I use the blender to make this cookie at home? Thanks
Unfortunately, the blender would grind up the oats in the recipe. It’s best to mix by hand or with a mixer. Hope you give them a try, Patricia!
I sure wish I had some of these to dunk in my coffee right now! OMG I forgot how small Izzy was. They grow so dang fast!!
Definitely making these for Memorial Day! So festive and delicious!
ohh Lizzy these cookies are really looks nice and yummy..
I would love a plate of these cookies, right now!
Lovely to see a photo of Izzy as a puppy. Your mother must have baked with huge quantities. I can’t imagine making cookies that required 2lbs of peanut butter! I’m glad you scaled back the recipe for us. Loving your patriotism xx
These cookies are so cute. And so is your puppy!
My grandkids will love these

Great monster cookies.
Izzy is adorable. I wish I could have a play date with her, I look forward to seeing more of her.

I’m not sure what my kids would go gaga for more: Izzy or these cookies! Both, I guess! Izzy is just too cute!
