Why You Must Make

  • Serving Desserts in Jars makes a fun presentation!
  • Who doesn’t love having their own, individual dessert instead of a scoop or slice from a serving dish?
  • Peach crisp an easy dessert to make when fresh peaches are at their prime.

Peach Crisp in Jars

This week the Sunday Supper gang is sharing recipes inspired by the Desserts In Jars cookbook by Shaina Olmanson. I’ve only made a few desserts using this method…and I was delighted for an excuse to try out some cute Weck jars I purchased this past winter. Peach crisp is one of my go-to summer desserts…and making individual servings in glass containers turns this homey dish into a company-worthy grand finale.

In fact, Bill was out to eat with a couple of his buddies…when he sheepishly called asking if he could bring the fellows by for dessert. I had just unpacked some new dishes…and boxes and papers were strewn across the kitchen floors. Great timing. But I quickly tidied up and greeted the sugar-starved guests with these Peach Crisp in Jars….who licked their plates, er…jars…clean.

Ingredient Notes

  • Kitchen Staples – Sugar, Ground Cinnamon, Flour, Brown Sugar
  • Fresh Peaches – Peel, slice in half and cut into slices. See the tips below on how to peel your peaches.
  • Ground Nutmeg – Grated. For the freshest flavor, buy a whole nutmeg and grate your own. I find these at our local Penzey’s.
  • Butter – I use salted butter since salt is a known flavor enhancer. Using unsalted is fine if you’re on a low-sodium diet.

Recipe Tips

  • Use fresh, ripe, fragrant peaches. If they are hard or don’t have the sweet aroma of peaches, they won’t be flavorful.
  • The easiest way to peel peaches is to cut a superficial X just through the peel on the side opposite the stem. Carefully place in a big pot of boiling water for a minute or two, then remove to a bowl of ice water. Once cool enough to handle, with a knife or your fingers, pull off the peel starting from the points of the X.
  • You can also cook this peach crisp in a baking dish. You’ll need to extend the baking time and cook until the center is hot and starts to bubble. Reaching a temperature hot enough to boil or bubble helps thicken the juices and prevents a watery filling.
  • I love a crumble/crumb topping, but if you have an alternative version with an oatmeal topping, that’s another tasty option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Pick Out the Best Peaches?

Local, seasonal peaches will always be the best. So buy your peaches in the summer from a local farmers market or farm stand. As mentioned above, they should have a sweet, fruity aroma.

What’s the Difference Between a Peach Crisp and a Peach Cobbler?

A peach crisp is topped with a crumble topping, which sometimes contains oatmeal. A cobbler is topped with a batter or dough and often gives a “cobbled” appearance similar to cobblestones when baked. Both have a sweet, fruit filling beneath the topping.

Can Frozen or Canned Peaches Be Used Instead of Fresh Peaches?

Fresh, seasonal peaches are always the best choice, but frozen and canned peaches are usually picked when perfectly ripe, so they are a viable option. If you buy peaches in a heavy syrup, drain them well before slicing and using. Good quality frozen peaches will work, too. Defrost them first and drain any excess juices before using.
